I'm thrilled to transition to Web Design. After leaving the computer field a few years, it's now more fun than ever. So many web sites need help (though their owners may not realize), and so many people and small businesses need web sites, but don't have a clue how to go about it. Now they will have me!
Historical Highlights
I received a Bachelor's in Math in 1979, because at the time, computer science degrees were hard to find. After flirting with a math teaching career, I instead joined IBM 1981 as a mainframe computer operator, and took computer classes at Union College in the evening. This helped me move quickly into system support programming, application programming, tools scripting, and various analyst and customer service positions. Here are some highlights:
- 25 Years at IBM total (in and out a few times for education, transfers, downsizing)
- B.S. Math 1979, B.A. Computer Science 1991. Graduate Comp Sci classes also.
- Programming/Scripting Intuition. I KNOW what computers do well vs. what humans do well and what humans need help with! I've made many a person's job easier by reducing human error and streamlining tedious procedures via programming.
- Teaching/Training - Once I know something well, I can teach it well. e.g. I trained a couple programmers who went on to great careers. New hires at times sought me out saying "You're the only one who talks to me as if you don't expect me to already know what you're talking about."
- Customer service - excellent customer service skills. As a consultant, one manager informed me a client's comment was the highest compliment he ever heard. The short version: "The many times I have called Pat for help, he never once made me feel stupid."
Web Design
I would have loved to learn Web Design years ago, but longer hours at IBM made it difficult to study anything new. I eventually left, did instrument and music related sales on Ebay (100% positive feedback!), and worked as a manager of a Distribution Center for heath food supplements. But the center closed, and rather than transfer to the main branch, I moved to Georgia to study in the nine month Kennesaw Internet Professional Program at Kennesaw State University.
Have Learned
Please click through the portfolio and project pages to see visually what I have learned and designed using the Adobe CS4 Suite (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, Soundbooth) and HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JQuery. We also touched on PHP and ActionScript (for Flash) and I will continue to develop expertise in these.
